For most people trying to get in shape they will probably have to contend with fat in the belly area which can be extremely difficult to reduce. These can often be in the area to the side of the torso and often referred to as ‘love handles’. The problem with the typical crunches you have probably already tried is that they do not really target this area. There are however, a number of exercises that work on this specific area known as the obliques. In order to perform these exercises you need to make sure you adequately warm up first. If you are new to train and unsure it may be worth speaking to a professional trainer at a gym who can guide you. Also bear in mind you will need to concentrate on eating good food in balance to see any real effects.

The first exercise is the Side Bend. As you are standing upright with your knees slightly bent you should lower your torso to one side and then lower it back to the other side. Make sure you do not lean back and forward, but only from side to side.

The second exercise is called the Torso Twist. Start from the same standing position as with the side bend. Slowly twist your body to your left side and then twist to your right side. Make sure you twist form your torso instead of the hips and concentrate on the oblique muscles which should be doing the work. Make sure you are not bending as you do this.
